Scope note
Containers in Christian churches, made in the form of a dove and designed to be hung by chains over the altar. They had a door, sometimes hidden under a wing or on the back, that concealed a small cavity once used to hold the eucharistic bread. Eucharistic doves were formerly part of the standard liturgical furnishings for churches that could afford them. They were typically made of gold, silver, or another metal with enamelwork.
